In Memoriam – Joakim Dungel

Joakim Dungel

Working for the United Nations mission in Afghanistan, Swede  Joakim Dungel  died yesterday when the compound was attacked by a violent crowd.

A lawyer, Joakim Dungel was dedicated to the advancement of human rights and had worked, amongst other things, with the War Crimes Tribunal at the Hague in respect of war crimes in the former Yugoslavia and in Rwanda.

A man who had clearly been dedicated to the assistance of humanity it is unclear how the Taleban, who claimed responsibility for the murder, could in any way enhance their political or religious attraction by such a brutal action.

For all you did – and all you tried to do – to enhance the lives of others, we sincerely thank you, Joakim Dungel.

RIP.

Rest in Peace. brother Joakim.

You did your part, perhaps more than your part, trying to make this a better world for the victims.

We hope your loss will not be in vain and light will finally reach even the most remote locations and minds.

My heartfelt sympathy goes out to your family, Joakim, on the loss of a truly wonderful human being. My son also worked for the U.N. and now works for the National Democratic Institute setting up elections in the mid-east. These are the kind of people we need in this world and it is sad that we now have one less angel among us.

Thank you for posting this in memoriam for Joakim Dungel - although the blog is anonymous as far as I can see.

As many others I was deeply disturbed by yesterday's events in Mazar-e Sharif, and the killing of defenseless civilians.

Joakim!

You worked to make this world a better place. Thank You for what You did.

So sad that You were stopped so early in Your mission.

And so unbelievably sad how Your life was taken away from You.

May God take You in his arms, and may You Rest in Peace.

Anders, a Swede in the same business as You.

R.I.P Brother Joakim!

It is ironic that Joakim was killed by the very cause he fight for. The rights of ordinary people. The ordinary people can kill in a frenzy too. Ordinary people can be do horrible things.
A world without sense is not for sensible people. Rest in Peace. Little brother!
I am proud that we studied in GU under 2004.

Dearest Joakim,

I recall the joy I felt when I first saw you across that room. You were big, bold and brash and incredibly kind, sweet and loving.

Thank you for sharing a small part of your life with me - I will never forget you.

We're all out here in the world working on behalf of others because we believe they, and we, can have a better world. Very proud of you.

Love,
Gina

Joakim,
There are simply no words to describe the sadnest I feel when I think of what happened to you. I keep dreaming of what might / must have happened in the minutes before you died and I am truly sad.
It is very ironic that you had to die for the very cause you were so passionate about... defending human rights. I still remember helping you write your final thesis for your LLM in 2004. You were so bright and dedicated. I was always so impressed by that.
Although our relationship had its ups and downs, I am very happy to have shared so many memories with you in the three years we were together... memories that I now am the only one remembering. That is very sad to me.
May you be happy where you now are and protect the ones who loved you so much. I am thinking especially of your family. My thoughts are with them. Peo, Ulla och Emilia, min hjärta och mina tänker är med er.
Love, Marie-Élaine xxx

I was lucky enough to work with and for Joakim in Sierra Leone in 2009. What a brave, brilliant, and hard-working man... This world is missing one of its brightest stars right now.

You have left an amazing legacy of carefully crafted judgments and your thirst for peace and acceptance was truly inspirational... there are many less-capable hands that will try to continue your honorable work...

May you rest in peace, Joakim.

Joakim is a real hero--it's too bad that the Afghans are still stuck in the Dark Ages and could not see it.

I do not believe in religion, and the Muslim faith has, in my estimation, become the religion of hate and intolerance.

Maybe if they had known this man, they would have understood he was on their side when he did not have to be.

Rest in Peace, Joakim.

May the family find some kind of support in knowing that you were a great support and source of happiness to the people you worked with and the people of the world you worked for...

Thank you for the happy times in Hebron.

To Joakim's family,
I did not know Joakim, but feel terribly saddened by his unnecessary death. It seems that like dictators, when religious leaders have a problem, their solution is to kill someone. The group of religious fanatics in America who burnt the Koran also want to kill people who disagree with them. Joakim was fighting against this kind of solution to problems. How many more people need to die before this vicious arithmetic stops?
My thoughts are with Joakim's family who have to find strength to go on without him.

Sincere condolences to Joakim's family and friends. No one should be subjected to such mindless, criminal and thuggish behaviour. It is heart rending to think that a person following his conscience and trying to do his best for fellow man should be murdered in such a senseless and barbaric manner.
May his soul and spirit find peace and his family and friends be sustained by his memory.

Mine was a sad duty to report on this exceptional man's untimely death in my humble blog. I do hope that some of his family can know about these comments and also know that over 5000 people have been moved to read this blog entry.
I did not know Joakim - I wish that I had. But I know I shall not forget this exceptional man.
Such a death appears to steal from the world a future promise, yet such a presence, such an honourable influence, is never lost.
