Svärdlång Lake in Bengtsfors Kommune

This is a trial video which just about shows this lake. It had previously been unviewable from the E172 road due to the heavy forestation. Some cutting has now taken place and the lake is just about viewable. It's one of over 300 lakes in Bengtsfors Kommune which is only 890 sq.kilometres and has just 11 people per sq.kilometre.

Not very often, thankfully, that something like this happens I hope no-one was injured. I travelled this route yesterday with quite high winds causing occasional problems. It is a reminder to us all just how much we rely on the Police and safety services. Imagine having to deal with this – and you are not even quite sure what chemicals are causing the explosion/fire. Risky work!

So yesterday it was down to Långås to collect my latest order for replacement windows in our home.

As you see the small windows above need replacement, having already done the larger windows below.

A little over 2 years ago I got a fantastic deal on my (now) 12 year old Mitsubishi Space Wagon from Motorcentrum in Trollhatan

So I had a little problem with my anti-roll bar connections, which is not at all surprising considering the hammering these things get over the gravel roads in my area. Nothing much to complain about, the car is 12 years old and has cost me very little in 2 years.

So I go here to get my cars fixed. I’ve been going here for 15+ years and have always been satisfied with the service, friendliness and the excellent (low) price.

My journey into Swedish culture took a major step forward when I dared to watch my first Swedish film without english subtitles – though I did use the Swedish subtitles.

I had the wonderful experience of watching the film written by Ingmar Bergman about his own parents early life (in english entitled The Best Intentions).

A wonderful story and so beautifully acted and directed.

So my journey has continued and we have just finished watching

A fascinatingly enchanting and delicately crafted story that is magnificently acted and produced.

Both have a haunting quality about them. The blend of beautiful scenery and those special character-full expressions and turns of phrase adding such richness to the events as they unfold in a leisurely, almost undramatic, way. Excitement is found not so much in the action, but in seeing the reactions of the participants.

One thing is very clear, whether it be the countryside, the culture or perhaps the hardness of life in those periods, I can be certain to behold some charismatic individual with a very special way of saying things.

Truly, truly, both films (total viewing about 8 hours) have been profound experiences for me.

In Memoriam – Joakim Dungel

Working for the United Nations mission in Afghanistan, Swede Joakim Dungel died yesterday when the compound was attacked by a violent crowd.

A lawyer, Joakim Dungel was dedicated to the advancement of human rights and had worked, amongst other things, with the War Crimes Tribunal at the Hague in respect of war crimes in the former Yugoslavia and in Rwanda.

A man who had clearly been dedicated to the assistance of humanity it is unclear how the Taleban, who claimed responsibility for the murder, could in any way enhance their political or religious attraction by such a brutal action.

For all you did – and all you tried to do – to enhance the lives of others, we sincerely thank you, Joakim Dungel.

RIP.
